Halloween Costumes and Real Heroes

At Halloween and Fall Festivals, kids dress up as all kinds of characters. How can you encourage kids to make Christ their lifelong hero?

I know Halloween is a hot topic for some Christians. Let’s put that aside for the moment and simply acknowledge the fact that kids dress up as their heroes all the time. Girls play princess and dress up. Boys play various hero games from Star Wars to Superman to soldier. Kids love pretending to be their heroes.

Playing allows children to learn and grow. They practice encountering situations through books and lighthearted play that prepare them for real life.

Is that hard to believe? Have you ever caught your kids pretending to drive? Have you ever read a book to your child about going somewhere new (like the dentist)? Have you ever turned folding laundry into a game? Try it when your kids are around and see if you get more willing helpers.

Kids learn through play. How can we use this information to teach kids how to really live for Jesus Christ every day?

• On your way to family activities (like soccer practice), brainstorm together ways you can glorify God when you get to your destination.
• Act out what happened to people in the Bible. (For one family devotional option, see our Bible Studies for Busy Families.)
• Make up a story of a kid who encounters a problem, but solves it by doing what God says. Let different family members take turns adding to the story.
• Remember, we are all works in progress.
