How to Pray for Missionaries

In this video we explained what a missionary is. Do you know any missionaries? Are there some from your church? The apostle Paul was a missionary. He often asked people to pray for him. How do we pray for missionaries?

James 1:22 says, “ Do what God’s teaching says; don’t just listen and do nothing. When you only sit and listen, you are fooling yourselves.” Each Friday we’ll look at one way your family can apply God’s Word, doing what it says as you walk through life this weekend and next week (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

In some of his letters, Paul suggests ways we can pray for missionaries like him. We can pray that missionaries know where God wants them to go.

And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.

Colossians 4:3 (NIV)

We can pray that they have the words to say when telling people about Jesus and teaching them to follow Him.

Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel

Ephesians 6:19 (NIV)

We can also pray that God keeps them safe and that all things will work to show how glorious and wonderful God is.

I know that you are praying for me. I also know that God will give me the Spirit of Jesus Christ to help me. So no matter what happens, I’m sure I will still be set free. I completely expect and hope that I won’t be ashamed in any way. I’m sure I will be brave enough. Now as always Christ will receive glory because of what happens to me. He will receive glory whether I live or die.

Philippians 1:19-20 (NIRV)

Here is your challenge. Choose one or more missionaries to lift up in prayer. Try to get their picture to put up on your refrigerator or mirror to remind you to pray for them often. If you can’t find a picture, write their names on an index card. You might glue part of a map or draw a picture of the part of the world where they serve. Sometimes you’ll know the city or country where they live. Other times you’ll only know the general part of the world (like “Southeast Asia”).

IMPORTANT: Be careful not to talk about missionaries or post their pictures online without their permission. Being a Christian is dangerous in some parts of the world. (See this post for more information.)

Take time today and other times you see your reminder to pray for the missionary.

  • Pray for their health.
  • Pray for their protection.
  • Pray for their family.
  • Pray that they may be encouraged.
  • Pray that they may get to know people who need to know Jesus.
  • Pray for opportunities to share about Jesus.
  • Pray tht they may have courage and the right words to say when telling people about Jesus.
  • Pray that they will clearly know what God wants them to do.
  • Pray that they would understand the language and culture where they work.
  • Pray that they would continue to grow in their own walk with Christ.
  • Pray for the people they talk to who ask Jesus to be their Lord and Savior.

I’m praying for you today, Heidianna. Here’s a long distance *hug.* “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13 NIV).

We’re praying, Heidi. I also want to remind you that all your hard work does not go unseen. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24 NIV). Don’t give up, my friend!
