Have you seen this picture of #TheDress? Some people are convinced the dress is blue and black while others are just as convinced it is white and gold. David Pogue summarizes the debate here and offers possible solutions. I find this whole debate a great illustration of worldview.
A worldview is like a pair of glasses. It helps us see the world more clearly and make decisions. It helps us decide what is good to eat, what to wear, what to do with our time, how to treat other people, and how to think about things. Whether they know it or not, everyone has a worldview—kids, adults, and teenagers.
So what does all of this have to do with a color-changing dress? Everyone is convinced that the way they see and relate to the world is the right way. There cannot be any other correct answer, right? Well, maybe not. Different people see and experience different things.
Is there any way to find out which answers are true? In the dress debate, people have tracked down the actual dress and used Photoshop’s eyedropper to draw out the actual colors. (It’s blue and black, by the way. White and gold is an optical allusion.)
What about our worldview? Is there a way to check that for truth? Yes, though it isn’t always easy.
Worldviews should be free of inconsistencies and practical (rather than simply theoretical). How do you know if your worldview fits those criteria? Honestly examining what you believe and how you live with an open heart and mind is the hard part. Are you willing to admit some of what you believe and parts of your life may be slightly off or even downright wrong? Am I?

The Bible cautions us to guard against false teachings that secretly slip into the church and its teachings (2 Peter 2:1-3). They may look good, but are they really true? What is your standard of truth? Are you intentional in your family about living out what you believe? How do you keep yourself on track?
