The Bible tells us about God and how we should live. The way we get to know more about God is by reading His Book. But how do we know we can trust the Bible?
Deuteronomy 6:4-7 says to talk about God’s Word with your family. Why not do it now? Call the kids and get ready to dig into how we know the Bible is true with this week’s family Bible study.
There are lots of ways we can know for sure that the Bible is true. Here are some of my favorites.
Sixty-six Little Books Make One Big Book
The book of the Bible is actually made up of 66 smaller books. These books were written over about 1,500 years by about 40 different people. The amazing thing is that all of those little books come together to make one big Book, all saying the same thing. Can you imagine? Doctors (like Luke), kings (like Solomon), a tax collector (Matthew), fishermen (like John), shepherds (like David), an army general (Joshua), prophets (like Zechariah), and religious leaders (like Paul) who lived on three different continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe) each wrote their part. Some of these people were highly educated (like Moses and Daniel) while others (like the disciples) were not. Most of these people had never met. In fact, it took about 1,500 years to write the Bible. They used one of three different languages (Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic) to talk about things that people could not agree about then and still cause debates and arguments today. God had His hand on all of those people, so that what they wrote fits together and doesn’t contradict each other. With each person’s different point of view, what they wrote still fit together to say the same thing. That’s a miracle!
“For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21 (NIV)
What is the message of the Bible? God has a perfect plan. Making the world and us was part of His perfect plan. But then humans made a wrong choice and sinned. They messed up. There were consequences and punishments for that sin. The punishment was brokenness. The world is now broken. Bad things happen and life is not always easy. Our relationships with other people are broken. They hurt us and we hurt them, even when we don’t mean to do it. We are broken too. Here’s the good news: God still loves us very much (John 3:16). He provided a way for us to come back into God’s perfect plan. That way is Jesus. Jesus lived a perfect life. He never sinned once (Hebrews 4:14-15). Then Jesus died and rose again to pay for our sin and brokenness.
“If you openly say, ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from death, you will be saved. Yes, we believe in Jesus deep in our hearts, and so we are made right with God. And we openly say that we believe in him, and so we are saved.” Romans 10:9-10 (ERV)
Archeology Supports It

Do you know what archeology is? An archeologist is someone who digs in the dirt to find old buildings and things people left behind a long time ago. Do you know what they have found? Not too long ago, people thought some stories in the Bible were made-believe. One of these stories was the battle Joshua and the Israelites fought in the city of Ai. (Read all about it in Joshua 7-8.) For a long time, people couldn’t find this city (partly because Joshua and his troops burned it to the ground about 1400 BC). When archeologist started digging in the ruins of et-Tell, they found the remains of a large Canaanite city, right where the Bible describes Ai to be. William Foxwell Albright wrote a paper in 1924 explaining why et-Tell was the long-lost city of Ai. Check out some pictures of Ai (now known as et-Tell) on this site. Here is a map.
The Bible Is God’s Word
The Bible is God’s Word. It is from Him and it helps us get to know Him better.
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6 (NIV)
God also wrote the Bible. That is why it is called “God’s Word.” It is what He wanted to tell us.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
Thank God today that we can trust the Bible. Tell Him why you know it is true. If you’re still not sure, ask Him to help you know for sure (James 1:5).
