Single on Valentine’s Day: Is That Ok?

What is a worldview? Let’s start with an easier question: does anyone in your family wear glasses? When someone sees things around them as fuzzy or blurry, they get glasses to help them see more clearly. A worldview helps us see the world more clearly and make decisions easier. It helps us decide what is good to eat, what to wear, what to do with our time, how to treat other people, and how to think about things. We learn how to do all of this from our families, friends, teachers, churches, and other things we watch and hear. Whether they know it or not, everyone has a worldview—kids, adults, and teenagers. Today let’s look closer at one part of your worldview.

Sunday was Valentine’s Day. People all over the country celebrated by giving valentines, flowers, chocolates, gifts, and spending time with those they love. That works great for couples and families, but what about those without a husband, wife, boyfriend, or girlfriend? Do you have to be married or in a relationship in order to be loved and complete? How would you answer that question?

Let’s compare what the world says with the Bible:

Lots of books, movies, songs, and things say that it is important to find a person to love to make you happy and give you a full life. (Think about Anna from “Frozen” for example.)

God’s Word, the Bible, says that God loves us and He is all we need (Matthew 6:19-34). He gives us other people to encourage us and support us, but not everyone will get married one day. Some may stay single. That is part of God’s plan too and is not “second best.”

Jesus never married. The apostle Paul didn’t either and preferred it that way. He was able to travel and do many things serving the Lord. He recommended the life, but also knew that some people would not do well living single. These were the people he advised to marry (1 Corinthians 7:7-9).

If you are a single parent or have kids who could grow up to be single (which is all kids), remember that. Marriage is blessed by God and a beautiful picture of His relationship with us. Nevertheless, God has a place for singles and their availability to do God’s work can in some ways be greater.

Every person is made to be in a relationship with God. When we put Him first, follow Him, worship Him, and obey Him, He will meet our every want and need. It won’t always be the way we expected, but God will always be there, loving us, and giving us all we need. Trust Him, love Him, and live for Him. It is the best way.
