I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving. If you don’t live in the States, I encourage your family to take some time to thank God for all He’s given and done for you in the past year.
One of our family traditions is to watch the 1947 movie “Miracle on 34th Street” on Thanksgiving day. (Please don’t judge us if your family doesn’t do Santa Clause.)
It’s always ironic when we get to one of my favorite parts:
Do you catch the irony? This movie shows on our home theater on Thanksgiving day, immediately following all the Black Friday commercials of the football game. It’s doubly ironic now that I’m promoting our own Black Friday/Cyber Weekend deals.
I find myself asking this question:
How do we keep Christmas about Christ and not about sales and stuff?
I think the answer comes in what we emphasize with our families. There’s nothing wrong with taking advantage of a good sale, but are we willing to be pushy, rude, and hurtful to others in order to get it? It’s ok to give gifts at Christmas, but are we solely focused on what’s under the tree?
These are all questions of perspective and worldview. Take a moment this Advent season to remind your children of the real reason for the season. It’s not lights, parties, and gifts. It’s about celebrating the hope we have in Christ Jesus whose birth we celebrate at Christmas.
