What Is True Worship?

Yesterday our Minister of Music and Media came to visit our class. He started a discussion that my second-graders continued after he left. We were talking about worship.

“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24 (ESV)

When Jesus said to worship God “in spirit and in truth,” that means that we mean what we say when we pray and sing worship songs (whatever the style). If we sing “Be Thou My Vision” thinking about the football game last night, we are not worshiping in spirit and in truth.

God wants us to remember that He is greater than anything else. He made us. He blesses us. He takes care of us. He sent Jesus to die for our sins and come back to life again. When we worship in spirit and in truth, we come to Him to tell Him we love Him. We ask Him for help and we remember that God is great.

When we come to worship God, whether it is in church or somewhere else, we must first confess our sins. We need to forgive other people and ask for forgiveness for ourselves. Then we are ready to worship our God, Lord, and Savior in spirit and in truth.

So we, too, should run the race that is before us and never quit. We should remove from our lives anything that would slow us down and the sin that so often makes us fall. We must never stop looking to Jesus. He is the leader of our faith, and he is the one who makes our faith complete.” Hebrews 2-3 (ERV)

Thanks again to our Minister of Music and Media for sharing with us Sunday. You know you made an impact when kids continue talking about what you said after you leave.
