Family Bible Studies for Mixed Ages

Reading the Bible and praying together regularly as a family are two of the most important things you can do to help your child develop a life-long faith. (Here are the others.) Finding the time can be challenging, but if we make it the top priority in our day, God takes care of the rest. (Learn more here.)

Our heart is to provide a library of Family Bible Study email series that work through sections or books of Scripture and will always be FREE. We will continue to add new series as we finish them.

These are great for mixed ages! Gather the whole family to do it together.

Open enrollment occurs every 10 or 11 weeks. You may only enroll in one series at a time. At any point, you may opt out of these emails or switch to the current series.

How's Your Heart? 1 & 2 Samuel (30 weeks)

Life can be hard. It is not always easy. In fact, Jesus promised us, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (Jn. 16:33b NIV). As we work our way through 1 and 2 Samuel, we'll see that Samuel, Saul, David, and the others were real people with real struggles, just like you and me. We'll see how some chose to honor the Lord when things got tough, and some did not. We'll see that sometimes the same person did right, then did wrong. We'll see that sin has consequences. We'll also the hope we have in the Lord, in Jesus Christ more specifically.

Everything seems to circle back to 1 Sam. 13:14: "But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command” (NIV). How can we be men and women, boys and girls, after the Lord's heart? What does that even mean? How can we keep the Lord's commandments when we mess up time and time again?

The Life of David (20 weeks)

I take great hope from the life of David. First, God gave him a special calling and purpose. He saw great victory in the Lord in the battle with Goliath. Then, he lived through years of uncertainty, on the run from people seeking to kill and destroy him. Through it all, he held fast to the Lord and God blessed his faithfulness. Then he greatly messed up, publicly. Yet, he responded with humility and repentance before the Lord and was still called "a man after God's own heart."

This gives me hope because I am not perfect either. I've greatly messed up, more than once, and sometimes publicly. These things keep me humble and on my knees. I am so thankful for Jesus Christ who died on the cross to take my punishment for sin and came back to life again. David trusted in the hope of the coming Messiah. We live in a time when He has already come.

The Life of King Saul (10 weeks)

Sometimes, I feel sorry for Saul. He never really got it. Saul started life understanding where he stood and what was expected of him. Then Samuel secretly anointed him as the first king of Israel. Based on his reaction, Saul wasn't sure he wanted that job. But, the Lord had spoken, so he was committed. Saul didn't have a role model to teach him how to be king, but the Lord gave him the Holy Spirit and the prophet Samuel. Unfortunately, Saul let his new power and position go to his head. He didn't listen to Samuel's warnings, and the Lord rejected him.

This cautionary tale has many lessons for us today. It's an opportunity to do some soul-searching. Do we truly have the Lord first in our hearts, or have we begun to compromise? Are we more concerned about what others think or what pleases the Lord? We may know what the answers to those questions should be, but what is the truth in the core of our being where only the Lord can see? Let's take some time to ask the Lord to examine our hearts and lives.

The Prophet Samuel (10 weeks)

Samuel is one of my favorite people in the Bible. His relationship with the Lord began at a very early age and God gave him a specific calling when he was still a child. In order to live out that calling, Samuel had to stay faithful to the Lord amid a culture that had turned away. He was tempted and urged to compromise his principles time and time again, but he never did. As a result, the Lord used him in mighty ways.

As we study the life of Samuel the prophet, let's take this opportunity to examine our own hearts and lives. Are we open to hearing what the Lord may be telling us? Are we living faithfully for the Lord, even if those around us are not? Are we boldly proclaiming God's truth to others? Are we whole-heartedly praying for others? In what ways is God using us to further His kingdom?

*NEW* Refocus: Hope in Hardship, Philippians (10 weeks)

It's easy to fall into the cultural trap of comparison. Either we're better than everyone else, or we are failing. Philippians addresses both of these things and calls us to focus on Christ, not those around us.

God used this study to challenge me. I pray He does the same for you. Let's invite the Lord to humble us, refocusing our hearts and minds on Christ, as we study this letter together.

The Spiritual Battle in Romans (10 weeks)

What is it that almost all of us struggle with or have struggled with at some time? I think of the war between the world and our calling by the Lord. Paul addresses this in Romans beautifully. In this study, I used the book of Romans to help us think through, realize, and study how to face these difficulties and grow from them based on God's direction.

Roger crafted this series, but the videos are mostly by Nancy Ruth. The teaching videos in this series are much shorter, so Day 4 includes a short teaching paragraph and an opportunity to reread the biblical text together.

How This Works

We are following the "How to Study the Bible" guide but spreading it over five days. Each day should take 15-20 minutes to do with your family. The sixth day is a time to pray together. On the seventh day, I recommend you discuss what you learned at church.
